The child musical memory: an exploratory study about audition of timbres sequence by children between 4 and 12 years

The aim of this research was to check the working memory of 36 Brazilian children for sequences of different timbres as well as their familiarity and preference for small percussion instruments. The participating children were from the city of Salvador, Bahia. Some of them had attended musical classes earlier, and some had not. The examined children were between 4 and 12 years old. Data analysis revealed that the majority of the children, regardless of age, recalled the 8 musical items they had been hearing. A comparison of this result with the studies that assessed the extent of memory for verbal items shows that the memory for musical items may have a higher capacity. Children that attended music lessons had a better index of familiarity with all instruments, but even those whom did not attend the same classes showed a high level of familiarity with the pandeiro, the triangle and the caxixi, which was probably caused by the cultural context of the city of Salvador. There was a significant index of indifference among the children aged 10 - 12 years. It could be observed that it is necessary to carry out further research and expand them in order to know more about the idiosyncrasies of musical memory in relation to its different perspectives.
