Ante los ojos del mundo: música, minería y conflicto social en el norte andino de Cajamarca, Perú

Desde tiempos prehispánicos Cajamarca ha sido una importante zona agropecuaria. Pero en las décadas recientes se ha convertido en una zona de agudas convulsiones sociales. Durante el gobierno anticonstitucional de Alberto Fujimori (1990-2002), el estado permitió el ingreso de trasnacionales mineras para la extracción de oro a gran escala. Estas han dañado considerableme el eco-sistema, la salud y el bienestar de la población local, creando descontento social y protestas. En ese contexto, el estado y la minería han impulsado una satanización de Cajamarca como un espacio cultural atrasado, reacio a las inversiones y al desarrollo. El presente artículo explora el rol que la música viene jugando en la representación de las protestas contra la minería y las actividades musicales y etnomusicológicas se complementan para contrarrestar una imagen demonizada por quienes defienden la inversión minera.

In Front of the Whole World. Music, Mining and Social Conflict in the Northern Department Cajamarca, Peru

Since pre-Hispanic times, Cajamarca has been an important agrarian and farming region in Peru due to its special hydrographic resources. But in recent years it has become a zone of intensive social upheavals. During the government of Alberto Fujimori (1990-2002) the Peruvian state admitted the entry of transnational mining corporations for the extraction of gold. Mining operations have had a negative impact on the water resources of the region, affecting the environment and the health and the livelihoods of the people, producing a social conflict and protest. This article inquires into the role music plays for the representation of the protest, and in doing so shows that musical and ethnomusicological practices are currently converging in order to counteract the demonized image created by the advocates of the mining exploitation.
