The Symphony Orchestra of Rio Grande do Norte (OSRN) is one of the most important musical institutions of the state. Its existence, since 1977, has passed with periods of great instability. We tried to reconstruct part of the history of OSRN, its performance and various sociocultural aspects characteristic of local and national government policies. The present study was concerned to make a theoretical approach that subsidize research involving music and history. The support came from the theoretical orientations of the historiography of Jacques Le Goff and Roger Chartier. According to these authors, the story should not just think in centuries, peoples and civilizations, but in social practices that can tell us more than speeches. Access to historical data sources was facilitated in the Book of Records as the Teatro Alberto Maranhão, the state Public Archives, Programs, Concerts, newspapers of the time and iconographic collection of documentary and members of the Orchestra. The literature on the state was essential to complement the research, especially on Natal, its capital. In addition to these sources, was of great importance to use of testimonials and interviews to record the ways of apprehending the performance of the Orchestra and joints existing in its origin and in its different historical moments. This paper is structured in three chapters. The first deals with the history of classical instrumental music in the state and the emergence of OSRN. The second chapter, entitled "Implementation of the Orchestra and its practices", addresses the social and political context of its creation, the concerts, the difficulties and changes, at first, under the baton of Maestro Mario Câncio. The third chapter, "A new proposal for Orchestra," covers the historical background of OSRN in a new time, under the baton of Maestro Osvaldo D'Amore, also including the findings and reflections on the concerts, difficulties and changes.
