At the beginning of Venetian public opera, feminine laments were an important dramatic convention. These compositions were characterized by excessive sadness, obsession and insanity. This dissertation aims to compare the feminine laments of the Venetian opera from the middle of the Seicento with the concept of melancholy from the same period. Melancholy was a theme of many different medical and literary sources of the seventeenth century, and it used to be considered as some kind of madness. In general, it was a condition that presents an excessive sadness and fear, followed by unquiet thoughts and death wish. The so called “love melancholy” would have, as main cause, the loss of a beloved object or its rejection, characterized for a obsession for this lost object. In art, the representation of melancholy and its symptoms can be founded in poetry, painting, theater and in music. The lament of Procris, from the opera Gli Amori di Apollo e Dafne (1640), and the lament of the main character of the opera La Doriclea (1645), both written by Francesco Cavalli, will be related with the characteristics described in the medical and literary sources about melancholy, as on its representation in art. The construction of this work is based in a critical and interpretative approach, inspired in the principles of the New Musicology, that seeks the meanings of the musical works from its insertion in their historical context. Therefore, the conceptions that moved the musical environment of the beginning of the seventeenth century, such as the search for the mimesis and the verisimilitude, provides a propitious scenario for the construction of this work.
